Short Synopsis

Fleeing a thunderstorm, Mickey ducks into an old mansion for shelter. The house turns on him immediately: a skeleton climbs out of a coffin, doors slam shut on their own, and a crowd of skeletons drags him to a pipe organ. Rather than let him leave, they force Mickey to keep playing while they dance around him, using his own music to control his movements. The chase runs from room to room, with furniture and doors joining in against him, until Mickey finally breaks free and is chased back out into the storm he had been trying to escape in the first place.

Why It Matters

  • The organ gag turns the haunted house from a place to escape into a trap that makes Mickey perform: the skeletons don't just chase him, they conscript him, which is a sharper joke than the walk-through-a-spooky-house template most 1929 horror-comedy shorts relied on.
  • It's Mickey's first horror-comedy short, and it reuses and reworks skeleton animation from that same year's Silly Symphony The Skeleton Dance, showing Disney cross-pollinating its two output lines within months of producing the original material.

Notes and Trivia

  • State censors objected to two gags involving a chamber pot and an outhouse, an early instance of a Disney cartoon running into local content trouble before the industry had a formal self-censorship code.
  • See also: The Skeleton Dance (1929), the Silly Symphony this short's skeleton animation is drawn from.
  • Entered the U.S. public domain on 1 January 2025, freeing the black-and-white original for reuse.
