Short Synopsis

Kaori and Miki are attending the grand opening of Bay City, a gleaming new waterfront complex. Ryo Saeba, the City Hunter, has lost his invitation and wanders the streets trying to find the reception. On the way he runs into a beautiful young woman who is being chased by Falcon, Ryo's friend and rival, the giant mercenary also known as Umibozu. Ryo steps in, and in the confusion the woman escapes in a luxurious Rolls-Royce. Ryo and Falcon set off in pursuit, which leads them straight to the hotel at the heart of Bay City. There they discover that the opening ceremony and the complex itself are the stage for something far more dangerous, and that the woman they were chasing is caught up in it. Ryo, Kaori, Falcon and Miki are drawn into the danger. The details of the conspiracy at the centre of Bay City and how it ends are not described in the sources this book could check.

Why It Matters

  • The film puts the series' mix of slapstick and serious gunplay into a compact action-thriller format, with Ryo's comic lechery switching instantly into cool professionalism once the shooting starts, the contrast that made City Hunter's tone distinctive.
  • It was one of two City Hunter films released on the same day in August 1990, alongside Million Dollar Conspiracy, at the height of the franchise's popularity. Based on Tsukasa Hojo's manga and animated by Sunrise, City Hunter was one of the most popular anime of its time in Japan, France and across Asia.

Notes and Trivia

  • Miki Itō voices Miki in this film and in Million Dollar Conspiracy, replacing Mami Koyama.
  • ADV Films released it in English on VHS in 1999.
